Building Plot Leading to Dialogue

Writer: Joyce AnnJoyce Ann

Hi All. I was down for a bit with that norovirus and then catching up with school. Anyway I am back.

As you build your characters and your plot, you will eventually need dialogue but how do you incorporate that and when? First, realize that dialogue must advance the plot by introducing new information or conflict. So if you look at your storyline, you will get a good idea as to when your characters will need to have a conversation. This can also happen with one character on a phone call where your readers will get new information and the suspense will be who is on the other end of the call.

Dialogue will give readers first glance at who your characters are.Your plot will give reader an idea of who they are, but your dialogue will show them who they are. It will pull out their emotions, feelings, tone, language, accent, intentions and voice. The dialogue will open up a porthole into your plot.

Plot is the story while dialogue is the action. Your characters are doing something or about to do something to somebody. They are talking, engaging. Your dialogue creates turning points in your story, moving the plot forward.

Readers will get tired just reading narratives. Narratives are great for a set up but then let your characters take over. Let them tell us what’s going to happen next. Let them show us how they are feeling. Let us hear them. That way, we, the reader, can either root for them or boo for them.
