Who hasn't read Dr. Seuss? I love them as a young girl and carried that love to my daughter, reading them to her when she was a young girl. Her favorite was "Robert the Rose Horse". Oh, how she giggled with that story.
Theodor Seuss Geisel earned a BA at Dartmouth College in 1925. He went on to Oxford intending to pursue a PhD in Philosophy, however, he met his future wife there and she encouraged him to pursue a career in drawing cartoons. He was known to 'doodle' character drawing while in class. (Something I can relate to, I would write lyrics in class and it looked like I was diligently taking notes). In 1927, The Saturday Evening Post bought a cartoon for $25 and that began his career as a cartoonist.
His first book, "And to Think I Saw it on Mulberry Street" was rejected 27 times by publishers before Vanguard published it. That was in 1937 and, as they say, the rest is history. His wrote 60 books which sold more that 600 million copies in 20 languages. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1956 from Dartmouth College (it was at that time he added 'Dr' to his name) and in 1984, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his contribution to education.
A little side note, Seuss is actually pronounced 'Soice'. I know I will remember that as it rhymes with Joyce. Kinda cool.
On September 24, 1991, Theodor Seuss Geisel died of cancer at the age of cancer at the age of 87. He will always be remembered for his unique writing, rhyming and nonsensical words.
Rejections are a part of writing. But having fortitudinous to keep your story alive is a must. You never know what the next publisher is going to say. Stay positive and keep writing!!
