Our Muse

According to the Oxford Language dictionary, a muse is a person or personified force who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist.

Every creative artist has one. My friend Jen who creates props and jewelry for movies says her dogs are her muse. They are with her in her workshop. They keep her motivated and working. She says they know when she is slacking and nudges her with their snout. LOL She is overjoyed to have him. Spiritually, her muse is her late husband Scott who passed eight months ago. They started this business together with nothing but a dream, were married over thirty years and he fought a neurological disease that finally took him. I grew up with both of them. The loss was devastating, I was so happy when Jen got back in their workshop.

Those of you who subscribe to my newsletter know my literary muse Eliza. My snarky, intelligent, independent, gets in way over her head problem-solving young lady who is my main character in novellas. She likes to get things done and she inspires me to keep writing my novels.

My other muse is my life long friend Freddy. We met when we were four-years-old. He lived across the street from me. I was walking with my mother to my guitar lesson, carrying my guitar. He was sitting on his porch with his mother. Our moms exchanged pleasantries, he shouted, “girls don’t play guitar, they play piano”. I shouted back, “I can’t carry a piano.” Been best friends since. Of course we have had our arguments over the years. But yesterday, we had a two hour conversation. He cried with me when I told him I was getting divorced. He tried to problem-solve with me. We laughed about things. We talked about the deep love we have for each other that we carried for fifty-seven years and counting. He told me he tells people I am the love of his life, and I guess he is mine. I know he is certainly my very best friend on this earth. We have been with each other through everything. And I mean everything. He inspires me to keep moving forward. To keep writing music, songs, and books. He nurtures my talents. Tells me how proud he is of me; always. We talk about writing his memoir and it is a story to be told.

So, who or what is your muse? What keeps you inspired? Think about it.

Until next time…
